Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper Blepharoplasty (Upper Eyelid Surgery) – Dallas, Plano, TX

Overview

Several factors such as normal aging, sun damage, smoking, mechanical stretching, and obesity can cause the eyelids to droop and sag as the supporting tissues deteriorate. This area is often one of the first to age, as the skin of the eyelid is thinner than the rest of the face. Eyelids that droop or bulge can cause people to appear much older or fatigued and can even affect the vision. Upper blepharoplasty, or an upper eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that improves the  appearance of the upper eyelids by removing excess fat and skin. This  procedure can be performed on men and women alike and offers a younger, more refreshed look that reflects across the whole face. For Dallas and Plano area residents who have loose, sagging skin or puffy bags around their eyes, an upper eyelid lift at Oculoplastic Associates of Texas can help reduce these unwanted effects and leave the eyes looking young and fresh.

Surgical Technique

Upper blepharoplasty can usually be performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Patients may choose to have this procedure on their upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Depending on these choices, the procedure can take  anywhere from 1 – 3 hours. For the upper eyelid, an incision is made along the natural crease of the eyelid. Once the incision is made, the doctor may reposition fat deposits, tighten muscles and tissue, or remove excess skin in order to leave the eye looking younger and refreshed

During/After Surgery

After the surgery, patients should expect to have swelling and bruising around their eyes for at least the first 1-2 weeks.. Our surgeons advise patients to plan for 1 – 2 weeks of recovery and rest before resuming their normal activities. Patients should schedule a follow up appointment for 5  – 7 days after the procedure, when the doctor will remove the stitches and evaluate their healing. Once fully healed, the eyes can appear younger and re-energized and may even improve the field of vision.

UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY FAQS

UPPER & LOWER EYELIDS?

For patients who need both upper and lower blepharoplasty, Oculoplastic  Associates of Texas can perform both surgeries at the same time. It  usually takes 1.5–2 hours and patients should return for a follow up  appointment in 5–7 days. The initial recovery time will still be at least 1-2 weeks.

RECOVERY TIPS?

Bruising is typically worst during the first week following surgery, but swelling  lasts somewhat longer. Makeup can usually hide the signs of surgery after 1-2 weeks. Most patients look much improved by 2-3 weeks. Patients are encouraged to use cold packs the first 3 days and sleep with their head elevated for 5 nights in order to decrease bruising and swelling.

Why Oculoplastic Associates of Texas?

One of the most critical milestones of cosmetic eyelid surgery is the doctor’s decision of where to place the pre-surgical marks on the skin. This determines where the incisions will be made. It requires an expert, experienced, and artistic eye to ensure a pleasing result. The surgeons of Oculoplastic Associates of Texas are all fellowship trained with impressive experience in surgery of the delicate tissues around the eye and are particularly meticulous in avoiding such problems when they perform eyelid procedures.
